Senior diplomat calls for upholding multilateralism to promote non-proliferation

        (Xinhua)    09:34, October 22, 2019

XIAMEN, Oct. 21 -- A Chinese foreign ministry official on Monday called on the international community to uphold multilateralism to promote non-proliferation.

Fu Cong, director-general of the Department of Arms Control of the Foreign Ministry, said it is indispensable to pursue multilateralism under the guidance of the United Nations and with the solidarity of all UN member states, as proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and their means of delivery constitutes a major challenge for the international community.

Fu made the remarks at the opening session of a training course for the 1540 Points of Contact in the Asia-Pacific Region, which focuses on how to improve the international non-proliferation system, implement the UN Security Council Resolution 1540 and strengthen national non-proliferation capacity building.

China is firmly against the proliferation of WMD and their means of delivery, Fu said, adding that the country will not deviate from the overall objective of non-proliferation, nor will it scale down its non-proliferation efforts.

The international non-proliferation system should be improved by strengthening international treaties including the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and establishing an open and inclusive global non-proliferation export control mechanism, he said.
